Climate Card vs WOWPASS vs NAMANE: Which Travel Card Is Best for Korea in 2026?

Choosing a Korea travel card comes down to where you will travel, how often you will ride the subway and buses, and whether you also want to pay in stores. The Climate Card, WOWPASS and NAMANE solve different problems.

The Climate Card is a Seoul transit pass. WOWPASS and NAMANE are prepaid cards that handle store payments and transit from separate balances. NAMANE also sells two different products, the NAMANE Card and the NAMANE PASS, and this guide keeps them apart. It does not name one winner for every trip.

Which Korea Travel Card Do You Actually Need?

Start with your itinerary, not with whichever card is most talked about online. Three questions narrow the choice:

  • Are you staying mostly in Seoul?
  • Will you travel outside Seoul?
  • Do you need one card for both transportation and shopping?

Climate Card: Best for Short Seoul-Focused Trips

What the Climate Card Covers

The Climate Card is an unlimited-ride pass for Seoul’s public transport. Seoul’s official Climate Card page lists the service range below. Check it for line-by-line coverage before you buy.

  • Included: Seoul-based subway lines plus some Gyeonggi-run subway sections, and Seoul-licensed city and town buses.
  • Not included: the Sinbundang Line, subway lines outside Seoul, intercity and airport buses, and buses not licensed in Seoul. Short-term passes also exclude Ttareungi public bikes and the Hangang Bus.
  • Subway exits: the card cannot be used if you get off outside the covered range, even when you boarded inside it. Tap on boarding and on exiting. Seoul says missing the exit tap twice suspends use for 24 hours.
  • Airport rail: AREX is covered from Gimpo International Airport Station to Seoul Station. You can get off at Incheon Airport Terminal 1 or 2, but you cannot board there with the card.

Short-Term Passes for Visitors

Seoul continues to offer short-term Climate Card passes in 1-, 2-, 3-, 5- and 7-day options. Seoul describes them as tourist passes that continue without changes. Prices from the same Seoul Climate Card page:

Short-term passPrice
1-day passKRW 5,000
2-day passKRW 8,000
3-day passKRW 10,000
5-day passKRW 15,000
7-day passKRW 20,000

The valid term begins on the date you charge the card, and a 1-day pass is valid until the last bus or subway that day. You cannot charge a card in advance. A physical card costs KRW 3,000 separately and is sold at vending machines in stations on Seoul Metro Lines 1 to 8.

Since March 17, 2026, designated new ticket machines accept overseas-issued credit and debit cards for buying and topping up these short-term passes, as reported by Korea JoongAng Daily. Seoul said an average service fee of about 3.7% applies to overseas cards. This covers short-term passes at those machines only, so do not assume every Climate Card product can be bought or recharged with a foreign card everywhere.

Important 2026 Change: The 30-Day Climate Card

Three different things share the Climate Card name, and they are easy to mix up:

  • Short-term passes (1 to 7 days): these continue and are the option for short stays.
  • The old 30-day prepaid Climate Card: this is being retired. Seoul’s notice says it could be recharged only until August 31, 2026, so it is not an option for new buyers. Press reports say the old 30-day program was scheduled to end on October 1, 2026 (see Digital Today).
  • The Climate Pass: a separate benefit Seoul added to the national Everyone’s Card (K-Pass). Seoul’s notice says eligibility is based on place of residence and that it is available to Seoul residents, so it is not a tourist product.

When the Climate Card Is Not the Right Choice

  • You plan to spend much of your trip outside Seoul.
  • You want one card to cover transit across the whole country.
  • You want a single card that also pays in stores.

WOWPASS: Best for Transportation + Everyday Shopping

What WOWPASS Does

WOWPASS is a prepaid card that combines store payments with public transport. According to the official WOWPASS guide, the WOWPASS balance works at offline merchants in Korea that accept local credit or debit cards, even at shops that do not accept international credit cards. You pay by inserting the card’s IC chip. For transport, the Tmoney feature is accepted on subways, buses and other public transport in Korea, and you tap the card on the terminal.

WOWPASS Balance vs Tmoney Balance

The most important thing to know is that WOWPASS keeps two separate balances. WOWPASS states that the Tmoney balance must be topped up separately from the WOWPASS balance. If your Tmoney balance is empty, you cannot pay for transit even when your WOWPASS balance has money in it. Taxi payment depends on whether the taxi has a compatible transit-card terminal.

Who Should Choose WOWPASS?

  • Travelers who want one physical card for both transit and shopping.
  • Visitors worried that a foreign card will be rejected at some Korean shops. WOWPASS says its balance works at merchants that accept local card payments, including some that do not accept international credit cards.
  • Travelers who will go beyond Seoul and still want a general transit card function.

NAMANE Card: Best for Separate Payment and Transit Balances

How NAMANE Card Works

According to NAMANE’s service manual, the NAMANE Card is a prepaid card you can load without opening a bank account. It combines a Rail+ based transit function with a prepaid payment function. The terms of service set the limit for the prepaid payment function at 500,000 KRW. You can buy the card at NAMANE kiosks, whose locations NAMANE lists on its site, or online. Reconfirm kiosk locations and operating status before you leave.

Pay Balance vs Transit Balance

Like WOWPASS, the NAMANE Card keeps two balances: Pay Balance for stores and Transit Balance for public transport. NAMANE’s manual says the two can be converted in the NAMANE app.

How to Use NAMANE for Transportation

  • For transit, tag the card on the terminal. NAMANE lists nationwide subways and buses, some taxis and trains, with exceptions for certain regions and routes.
  • For stores, insert the IC chip. NAMANE says payment may be restricted in hotels and on mobile POS.
  • Taxis on the transit balance work only for taxis operated by T-money Co., Ltd. in the listed areas. Support at stores, taxis and transit systems depends on the individual operator and Rail+ conditions.

Who Should Choose NAMANE Card?

  • Travelers who want to keep their transit budget strictly separate from their shopping budget.
  • Travelers who want to manage balances in the NAMANE app.
  • Fans who want a custom design. NAMANE’s site lists kiosks for full-image and K-pop cards.

NAMANE Card vs NAMANE PASS: Do Not Mix Them Up

NAMANE sells two different products with different benefits, so check the exact product name before you buy.

NAMANE Card

The NAMANE Card is the standard rechargeable card described above, where you load and spend your own balances.

NAMANE PASS

The NAMANE PASS is a separate product. According to the official NAMANE PASS website, it combines a prepaid retail payment balance with an unlimited public transportation pass.

  • Passes are available in 3-day and 5-day options.
  • The transit pass covers unlimited rides on nationwide subways and city buses.
  • It includes one free round-trip ride on the A’REX All-Stop commuter train between Incheon Airport and Seoul.
  • The separate Pay Balance can be used for general store purchases, just like a standard debit card.

Because airport pickup locations and package prices are subject to change, always verify the current terms on the official product page before you buy.

Common Mistakes Foreign Visitors Make

  • Buying a Climate Card for nationwide travel. If you plan to leave Seoul, prepare a separate transit and payment method.
  • Topping up only the WOWPASS general balance. Top up the Tmoney transit balance separately before you ride the subway.
  • Assuming the NAMANE Pay Balance works for transit. Check your Transit Balance and convert funds in the NAMANE app if needed before you reach the subway gates.
  • Confusing the NAMANE Card with the NAMANE PASS. Verify the product name and its current inclusions on the official website.
  • Confusing the old 30-day Climate Card with the short-term passes. Visitors should look at the 1- to 7-day passes, not the retired monthly card.
  • Assuming a Climate Card short-term pass starts the next day. Seoul says the valid term begins on the date of charging and you cannot charge in advance, so charge it on the day you start riding.
