Korea eSIM for Tourists: How to Choose, Buy, and Activate One

1. What Is a Korea eSIM?

A Korea eSIM for tourists is a downloadable prepaid mobile plan that gives international visitors Korean mobile data without a physical SIM card. You buy a plan online, receive a QR code, and scan it in your phone’s settings to add a line on a Korean network such as SK Telecom, KT, or LG U+.

Some plans cover data only, while others add calls and texts. Rules differ by provider and by product, so this guide uses the published eSIM pages of LG U+ as its main worked example and points out where KT or SK Telecom may differ. Every statement is tied to the provider that made it, because a rule on one product page is not a rule for all Korean eSIMs.

The sections below follow the order in which most visitors make decisions: check your phone, decide whether you need calls and texts, choose a plan, install it, and know what to do if something goes wrong. A short checklist and a few extra questions close the guide.

2. Check Your Phone Before Buying a Korea eSIM

Make three separate checks before you pay: whether your phone supports eSIM, whether it is unlocked, and whether the Korean network will actually work with your exact model. They are different questions, and passing one does not answer the others. LG U+ states that its purchases cannot be cancelled or refunded once payment is complete, so these checks are worth doing first.

eSIM compatibility

Dial *#06# on your phone’s keypad. LG U+ says that if an EID appears, your phone supports eSIM. An EID (embedded identity document) is a serial number built into phones designed for eSIM.

Carrier-lock status

LG U+ states that only country-unlocked phones that support eSIM can be used. If your phone is locked to a carrier or country, ask your home carrier about unlocking it before you travel.

Carrier and network compatibility

Supporting eSIM does not guarantee that a Korean network will work with your phone. LG U+ says service may not be available on devices purchased outside South Korea, depending on network conditions, and that its eSIM is not supported on Google Pixel, Motorola, or OPPO devices. Its FAQ lists only Pixel and OPPO, so confirm your model on the current product page. Other providers publish their own device information, so check the page for the exact plan you want.

3. Data-Only vs. Data + Voice: Which Plan Do You Need?

The difference is what the plan lets you do with calls and texts, and that decides whether Korean apps can send you a verification code. The table shows how LG U+ describes its two eSIM types; other providers may differ.

Feature (LG U+)Data OnlyData + Voice
Mobile dataYesYes
Incoming calls and textsYesYes
Outgoing calls and textsNoYes
SMS verification for restaurant and taxi reservation appsNot availableAvailable
Identity verification for banking or government servicesNot supportedNot supported

Data-only functionality

A data-only eSIM is enough for maps, browsing, and messaging apps that run over the internet. Because LG U+ does not offer SMS verification on data-only plans, do not rely on one if a booking or login may text you a code. LG U+ also says you cannot add voice to a data-only eSIM later; you would need to buy a Data + Voice eSIM instead. Decide before you buy.

Voice and SMS functionality

Outgoing calls and texts on LG U+ eSIM plans are charged at per-minute and per-message rates, so check the current rate table on its FAQ page before you count on them. SK Roaming, SK Telecom’s service for visitors, describes a different setup for its data, call, and SMS eSIM: voice and SMS require passport verification after you enter Korea, and it says foreigners staying more than 91 days cannot complete that verification. Both examples show why you should read the voice terms of the exact product, not assume they match another carrier’s.

Korean phone numbers and SMS verification

A Korean number does not open every verification system. KT’s eSIM purchase notes state that its eSIM does not support personal authentication, which matches LG U+’s statement about banking and government services. The cited sources do not state whether other apps, such as shopping or delivery apps, will accept a visitor eSIM number.

In practice, treat a visitor number as useful for reservation-style texts only where the provider says so, and keep a backup way to confirm bookings, such as email or an in-app message. If an app insists on real-name authentication, a tourist eSIM may not satisfy it.

4. How to Choose the Right Korea eSIM

Match the plan to what you will actually do in Korea, then confirm each point on the exact product page.

Your situationWhat to look forConfirm before buying
Maps, browsing, and messaging apps onlyA data-only plan may be enoughThe data allowance, speed rules, and plan length
Restaurant or taxi apps may text you a codeA plan that includes voice and SMSThat the product page states SMS verification is available and whether any verification is needed after arrival
Banking or government identity verificationDo not count on a visitor eSIMLG U+ says this is not supported; confirm with any other provider
Sharing data with a travel companionA plan that allows hotspot (tethering)LG U+ says tethering works on its eSIM; other products vary
Phone bought outside Korea or locked to a carrierA provider whose device rules fit your phoneUnlock status and the provider’s supported-device information

Prices, plan lengths, activation deadlines, eligibility, and refund terms can change, so treat the official product page as the final word. Whichever plan you pick, you will use data for navigation, and our guide to using Naver Map and KakaoMap in English in Korea covers the apps themselves.

5. How to Buy and Install a Korea eSIM

Before the trip

  • Buy from the carrier or an authorized provider. LG U+ says you can purchase its eSIM in advance, but it works only in Korea.
  • Note the activation deadline. LG U+ states that its data eSIM must be activated within 60 days after purchase, while KT’s purchase notes give installation deadlines that differ by product.
  • Read the refund terms first. LG U+ says eSIM purchases cannot be cancelled or refunded once payment is complete.
  • Check eligibility. KT describes at least one of its eSIM products as exclusively for foreigners visiting Korea, and SK Roaming says its data, call, and SMS eSIM cannot be bought by Korean passport holders.
  • Enter your details carefully at checkout. LG U+ says information cannot be updated after payment is complete.

Installation

You receive a QR code after purchase. LG U+ says its eSIM can be used right after you scan the QR code, with no separate activation procedure. Your phone still needs an internet connection to complete installation, so use Wi-Fi or another stable connection. Menu names vary by phone brand and software version, so treat these paths as examples taken from LG U+’s instructions.

  1. iPhone: go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM, choose Use QR Code, scan the code, and continue to register the eSIM.
  2. Android (as shown by LG U+): go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager, choose Add eSIM, scan the QR code from the carrier, and add the eSIM.

Activation and mobile data settings

Installing the eSIM and starting your paid usage period are not always the same moment. LG U+ says the usage period of its eSIM is counted from your first data use, not from installation. Other providers may start the clock differently, so check the product page.

After you land, make sure the eSIM line is turned on and selected for mobile data, and check that your home SIM is not set to use data abroad. LG U+ notes that its eSIM phone number appears in your device settings only after you arrive in Korea. If you land at Incheon, our comparison of AREX, the airport bus, and taxis from Incheon Airport to Seoul Station can help you plan the ride into the city.

6. What Does “Unlimited Data” Actually Mean?

“Unlimited” does not describe one standard product. LG U+ says its data eSIM provides unlimited data without speed limits or throttling, yet it also notes that speeds may be managed during periods of excessive network congestion. Some other sellers describe plans that slow down after a daily high-speed allowance, so the same word can mean quite different things. We could not confirm KT’s current published terms, so read the data and notice sections of the exact product page. Look for a daily cap, the speed after the cap, and whether you are buying LTE or 5G.

7. Common Korea eSIM Problems and How to Avoid Them

  • Deleting the eSIM. LG U+ says a downloaded eSIM cannot be restored once deleted, and that a deleted eSIM or damaged device cannot be refunded or replaced. Keep the eSIM installed until your trip is over.
  • Buying for an unsupported phone. Run the *#06# check and review the provider’s device notes before paying, because purchases are final on LG U+.
  • Wrong details at checkout. LG U+ says information cannot be changed after payment, so check names, email, and dates before you pay.
  • Hotspot not working. LG U+ says tethering is allowed, but the connection may not work smoothly on some devices; its advice is to restart the phone.
  • No data after landing. LG U+ suggests resetting network settings: on iPhone, Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings or Transfer; on Android, Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. If that does not help, contact the provider’s support, which LG U+ offers through chat on its website.

LG U+ says its eSIM can be used on Apple Watch (Wi-Fi models) and iPad (Cellular models) that support eSIM, though activation and carrier support may vary by country and provider.

How many eSIMs can I buy?

LG U+ allows up to 3 items per passport. Other providers set their own limits.
